In the recent episode of TRON UPRISING, "We Both Know How this Ends," Episode 12 of this Season 1, we get a brief cameo appearance of... Yori's costume... in some sort of 'glass' case. The character, Able, seems to have a fascination with the old "Grid" of the original TRON movie, and some sort of connection with "Tron."

Perhaps there is a story behind all this, and I would assume there is.

How did he get all these old Tron items, bits, old lightcycles, etc? How did he get Yori's uniform, or is that perhaps Yori in stasis? Perhaps she is actually in there, saved in some sort of digital pod, having received similar 'injuries' like TRON? How did get hold of this? Does it mean anything at all? Perhaps so... we'll have to tune in to find out...

TRON 3: EXPECTATIONS AND POSSIBILITIES

The news is out: TRON 3 is in the works officially. So what should we expect? It appears a script was written or being written, and another writer has been hired to perhaps add to, or touch up the script. It could very well be that this new writer has been hired to enhance dialog, to flesh out relationships of the characters, or other unknown details. While there are always expectations of fans, what might we really expect?

Well, of course we'd like to see the return of certain characters, but are our expectations realistic? Are they logical? TRON LEGACY ends with the 'death' of Kevin Flynn, or what appears to be his 'death,' one never knows in science fiction, perhaps he's still in that little flash drive Sam holds in his hand at the end. The "character" of Quorra is now in the 'real world,' and we have the logical expectation that she will appear and meet characters in the 'real world.'

We have characters we know she can meet which would perform logical functions in such a story, besides Sam. Dan Shor, "Ram," Roy Kleinberg is a computer expert who can be trusted to study the Disc from the Grid that likely made its way through with Quorra, how this works we do not know, and whether or not it shows up merely as 'information' which is also on that little flash drive, "Ram" Kleinberg is the obvious hacker who could look at that data. He would be an obvious choice to be a technical exposition provider in the 'real world,' and if they invent a new character to perform this function, I'm out, I'm seriously opting out of the TRON 3 movie completely. Not to involve original characters which would be obvious, and have 'younger, sexier' characters invented is simply stupid. Cindy Morgan's character of "Lora" is also obvious, as she is likely married to Alan Bradley, which we hope would be in the movie as well. He is not only Sam's 'surrogate' father, that might also mean that Cindy Morgan is Sam's 'surrogate mother,' as well, outside his own grandparents. Lora's logical function in the story, if our characters end up being even remotely interested in the idea, once they learn of the 'GRID' and meet Quorra would be to be part of the investigation, whether it be Alan's personal inquiry, or an official Encom investigation as to how all this might have happened technologically. (If they decide to go there in the story.) As shown to us in the Tron Legacy Prequel Comic story, Lora Bradley who may have gone to Washington D.C. to lobby Congress for any number of reasons, whether it be Net Neutrality, the use of Encom tech in Drones, the unethical treatment of workers in Lithium mines, we have no idea, could play a major role in conveying information which relates to the 'real world' situation involving Dillinger's potential schemes... Lora Bradley and Roy Kleinberg have many logical reasons to be in the story, and not simply there for cameo appearances. If they invent characters which basically replace these older characters, playing roles these older characters could have and should have very well played, then I'm ready to start bashing the film immediately for such stupid decisions, but we won't know until we get there.

Alan Bradley should obviously be in the story, and we would hope, play a major role, because if they decide ONCE AGAIN not to have "TRON" himself, well, why are they still calling this "TRON," and if not, they better have Alan Bradley. David Warner, if they can film this movie before he leaves this world, is the logical antagonist, and with his son, we have the possibility of a nice antagonist plot, which could have twists... will his son ultimately be his ally or his enemy? What evil plot might Dillinger be concocting? Possibly another megalomaniacal scheme involving 'control' of technology, today we have DRONES, the internet, any number of things which could have thrilling and real world consequences to put our characters in jeopardy and keep the audience riveted. Well written plot ideas which connect younger audiences with older ones might include the older generation of hackers, Roy and Alan, with their philosophical comment on today's technology, and younger hackers, Dillinger Jr, and Sam and their worldview. Quorra gets thrown into the mix to open up a whole new world of questions and possibilities. If this sequel ends up being nothing more but another rehash action flick, it could be the most disappointing and wasted opportunity in cinema history.

We also have the possibility of adding even more current events into the mix, by adding Peter Jurasik, "CROM," also known in the real world as the User, "Mr. Henderson," from Wall Street. We know nothing of him, other than that back in the 80s, he was into the Savings and Loan business, and his program CROM was usurped by the MCP. Possibly, Mr. Henderson could be up to new tricks by screwing with Wall Street computers, the Stock Market, and even being in cahoots with Ed Dillinger, and if David Warner doesn't make it to the year 2014, well we still have this great actor, Peter Jurasik kicking around, who could very well play that major villain.

What will Quorra's role be in the real world? Will our familiar characters, Alan, Roy, Lora, Sam do something with this new revelation of the 'GRID,' and what will it mean to our antagonists, if they find out about it? What will they do with it/about it? "TRON" himself is somewhere on some hard drive, and it could very well be that he could be resurrected to fight his way inside the computer to defeat some diabolical plot hatched by Dillinger in the real world with some new computerized scheme.

Perhaps there is some aspect of Quorra that is significant to Dillinger that he can use in some master-control project, aimed at taking control of some systems, and only TRON can get to it, inside the internet, inside the world of systems in the data, within the computers.

Perhaps a whole new version of the "GRID" will be introduced, possibly the idea of a Grid which is somehow more like the internet, rather than an isolated system, and Lora, Alan and Sam must build a new laser system to transfer people or make it possible for people to get back inside for reasons integral to the plot. We hope that these elements are not ignored by the new writers, but once again, we won't know until we get there. We would hope that just as TRON LEGACY made comment on our modern world and it's technology, that TRON 3 will attempt to take it even further, and not simply give us a cheap sequel with 'just enough action' and 'new devices' to simply sell another movie.

Bruce Boxleitner, member of the Board of Governors of the National Space Society, who also played Captain John Sheridan on the television series Babylon 5, and as we all know, "Tron," has often pointed out in interviews that science fiction inspires people to create and develop technology from "the dream that it gives us." Many scientists and engineers at NASA were, for instance, greatly inspired by Star Trek and Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Science fiction writers often imagine different kinds of technology which might exist in the future, and they also imagine scenarios in which this technology might be used by the characters they also create. One of the motivations for science fiction writers to imagine such possibilities is simply the desire for a 'better future.' The advancement of technology represents 'the future' in many people's minds because through time we see society change through various improvements and advancements in various kinds of technology.

Early in the 20th Century, people dreamed of flying cars, jet-packs, vast utopian cities, computers, robots and interplanetary travel, they imagined that all of this would have most certainly been invented by the year 2000. The truth is that the technology for all these things actually was all invented, but never widely implemented. What all these people dreamed of was a 'better future,' likely because as always, the present is full of problems, and technology we always hope may help solve those problems. A jet-pack or a flying car may represent more personal freedom, but as those things were actually invented, the 'vision' of the future never really happened, and while many writers imagined all these amazing 'things,' they didn't really consider the human dimension to 'the future,' and those who did were writing about futures which were not so happy. George Orwell, Aldous Huxley and Ray Bradbury for instance, wrote about those same kinds of futures, only where all these developments in technology were used against people. The convergence of all the technologies of their time were imagined to come together and make life worse, and as it has turned out the more negative science fiction visions have come true more so than the positive visions of the future.

We have all the things that the science fiction writers dreamed of, but we never came close to the utopian dream of 'The Jetsons' or Star Trek, and most of the technology we have today has come about as a reflection of a kind of collective state of humanity. We do not have robot drones doing our laundry, the initial use of drones is for killing people. We do not have jet-packs or flying cars, we have monster-size gasoline burning vehicles that have GPS tracking devices, and little black boxes that shut your car off if you don't pay the bills. The future imagined by past sci-fi writers is actually getting further and further away each day, and currently any technology or invention that might 'change the world' is carefully controlled, sometimes hidden, banned or abandoned because it actually might, or most often, it does not cater to the whims of the people which are also carefully monitored and influenced by the companies which have the power to create these technologies.

Our own state of culture dictates what technologies we have, and if we are restrictive, oppressive, and violent, that is the kind of technologies we will also have. Technologies reflect our state of mind, our state of cultural being, and if we live a certain way, our technologies will follow. There is scarcely a device or machine or any kind of technology that hasn't already been invented, or at the very least, drafted, tested, but then often abandoned, thrown away, covered-up, or banned. Some for good reason, some for no good reason. Technology simply reflects the state of the User, and if we are unthinking, selfish and unreasonable, so will our technology be as well.

TRON suggests many things about us and our technology, and in 1982, it offered a concept and illustrated a possibility, that of the dream of the personal computer revolution, which would help 'free us' and give people another great tool to create a better future. The conflicts in the story suggested many of the conflicts we now are faced with here in the future year of 2012. Unfortunately, after 30 years of trying this out, we have come to see that this vision of the future is beginning to be restricted. Previously, because IBM and Xerox either had no imagination or they couldn't see the money-making potential of the personal computer or the internet, it took Apple and Microsoft to come along and give us what we now see overwhelmingly influence us every day. Today however, after 30 years of developing this technology, we see that Apple and Microsoft, among the major internet companies such as Google, the new wave of development of this technology has come under the same purview that was IBM and Xerox of the 50s, 60s, and 70s, and that is that they will control and dispense the technology that we shall experience and use, and today, Google and Apple control the experience of computers and the internet, our computers, our internet. They, like IBM and Xerox prior to the PC revolution, cannot see what the next phase of development is, nor are they interested in pursuing it. In TRON LEGACY, it is clearly illustrated that the representatives of the PC and internet revolutions, TRON and CLU, have become evil. We got our personal computers, we got our internet, but now those same two things have begun to turn around and be the opposite of freedom and creativity, they are beginning to reach into our lives and control us, they are turning your personal computers, and smart devices, and your use of the internet into their mainframe, their MCP, their control mechanism to be used against you. Things can be turned around, and as technology reflects us, there you have the visions, not of the positive science fiction authors, but the ones predicted by Orwell.

In TRON LEGACY, we see the heroes must fight against this 'turning to the dark side' of their former revolutionary heroes, and perhaps it's all because WE have lost our way. TRON and CLU are our programs, and they seem to have gotten away from us. The original spirit of TRON was a free system, and increasingly every day, this is just simply no longer the case. What we must do now with our technology is what we must do with ourselves as well. If we do not see this, the implied nightmare of CLU (or the MCP) making it off the GRID and coming into our world to control and destroy us, would in effect take away our technology from us, and create a nightmare so awful, it would likely be more like the TERMINATOR or the MATRIX. It may not take the form of artificial intelligence, it may simply be that the ENCOMs of the world decide to enslave the human race.

There are opportunities out there right now, even still, to not only stop this from happening, but to have yet another PC or Internet revolution, and looking back at the last 30 years, I would argue that there is no other way, the technology that is now being turned against us must be part of that new PC/Internet Revolution. It can even take the form of the purely capitalistic, another money making venture, but we are beginning to see that Apple and Google, the very greed-filled industry that profitted from the PC/Internet Revolution wants nothing to do with, which oddly, doesn't make sense, but it is what it clearly occuring. These companies have become what Steve Jobs and Bill Gates once called the old dinosaurs back in the 70s, they have become what they had to stand up to in order to be what they are today, and they refuse to change and be a part of the next tech revolution, they would more like to CONTROL that revolution, but looking back at the last 30 years, you can see that it came about because of the arrogant ambition and challenge seeking Steve Jobs, the spirit of revolting against IBM and Xerox, it came about from the people's desire for freedom from having to sign on to a mainframe and using 'allowed programs' and waiting turns and being 'denied access.' Now this is beginning to be how the internet works, and it isn't IBM's fault.

It may appear to the average person that the iPad and the iPod and the iPhone are the latest and greatest and only computer-internet devices and platforms in existence out there, and it may appear to the average person that only Apple and Google know anything, or do anything, or create anything, but this isn't the case. They may have control of the market, like IBM once did long ago, but they are seemingly not paying attention to the 'computer geeks' of the 21st Century. They also can't see how to make money off of what could be the next 30 year cycle, because they are not innovating any more, just like IBM, but what was inconceivable to IBM back in the 70s, ("why would the average person want or need a computer?") now applies to these overbearing fossils, Google, and Apple. They are not implementing the most cutting edge developments, though what they roll out to the public seems cutting edge, it is merely the latest packaging designed with 10 new control mechanisms and user-control agreements which prevent anybody from using stuff without their consent, or knowledge, they want to know what you're doing with your computer technology and they want to be able to own or control that. That's not what computers are for!

There are plenty of people working on all sorts of new things, but like the 70s, like little shy Steve Wozniaks, they have no idea that what they have is the next revolution, they're not sure if what they have is anything at all, they're not entirely aware that their latest little nerd-obsession is going to change the world, the only difference between IBM of the 70s and Apple and Google of 2012, is that IBM wasn't spying on every single person in the country. This raises all sorts of concerns, but I won't get into that in this article, the point is, there actually are pioneers out there, working diligently, and slightly oblivious to what they actually have and what it means, and meanwhile Apple and Google are most certainly not going to be implementing these things in their latest iPads and smartphones or tablets, the only things they are concerned with are more control of their customers, they're not concerned with freeing them.

What TRON LEGACY as well as the old TRON represents is the spirit and direction of that tech revolution, which we may go through over and over and over again until the end of time, it is the spirit of the freedom of the User, vs. the inevitable control mechanisms that come about from the greedy and overconfident monsters which pop up when new technology is created and developed. If you are an innovator, it is likely you don't work for Google or Apple today, if you're an Investor, you'd be better off looking toward the future, and for these new and unique "Wozniaks" of today, and you'd be better off becoming your own new Steve Jobs, but as a warning, see what happened? Do you see how the cycle goes? The people who wanted to use computers in the 60s may have had to sign up for 'computer time' on some mainframe, but they dreamed of having their own, today, people begrudgingly use Facebook and Google, and they use iPads or Androids or whatever is currently in fashion, but they secretly dream of something new that gives them more freedom, the technology for this new revolution is as unnoticed and ignored as was the Altair by IBM in the old days, expect Google and Apple to come up with the 'next big thing' and you'll miss out on it, and you'll fail to be a part of the next tech revolution which is already a few days overdue in its inception.

The Users are the center of it all, and now that the control of the Users is getting so tight, and restrictive, it simply pushes the vapors through the cracks, and under the door, you can't stop it, the time has come, fight for the Users, let the next tech revolution begin, it will be a great oversight and shock to the Googles and Apples of the world, but it must be, or we face those science fiction scenarios which, at this point, if we slide into in this next decade, it means the genres of the apocalyptic scene, it means Skynet, it means killer robots, it means Blade Runner, it means Escape from New York. It will make William Gibson novels look like the Jetsons.

This comparison is intriguing because it takes TRON a step beyond the simple concept that people working on computers have 'cyberspace' alter-egos, or avatars as they are called. The concept of 'avatar' comes from the Hindu belief that a god can incarnate into a human being, and operate in a sense as one from 'on high.' In the 'electronic world,' the 'real people' are called Users, as they are the actual users of computer software, but these sentient programs believe them to be like gods. The 'electronic world' or cyberspace as we might call it today is somewhat of an ambiguous concept in TRON, but it isn't accidental.

Inside the 'computer' as it is presented to us, it would seem both literal and digital, the landscapes are a cross between three-dimensional renderings of video games of the time, but also a kind of microscopic physical landscape of circuit boards and wires. The ideas are blurred a little between the purely digital and the 'nanoscopic.' These beings inside the computer are truly the 'little people' of ages past, they are in a sense digital elves, doing the bidding of the Users, running about performing tasks on the other side of the screen like tiny elemental spirits.

In folklore, the "Little People" also known as the elves, the fairies, gnomes, brownies and countless other names, are a mysterious group of mythical beings who exist in some way as if on another plane of reality. W.Y. Evans-Wentz and Thomas Keightley have written extensively academic studies of the folklore of fairies and elves, and in many of the stories they collected in their books, one finds a common one, "those who return from Faerie." Also called "Fey" and "Fairyland,' among many other names, the tales are told of people who have travelled afar to the 'other realm,' the land of the elves. "Somtimes one may thus go to Faerie for an hour or two; or one may remain there for seven, fourteen or twenty-one years..." [Evans-Wentz] The stories often tell of a man who disappeared for a time, and lived with the Fairies, often revealing a moral or some lesson that is learned. It is likely that it is no coincidence that our hero is named Flynn, a very Irish name indeed.

In TRON, this idea that a man is sucked into a computer is generally considered a pretty silly idea, and obviously a science fiction plot device, so that he can end up in 'another world.' The most interesting thing about this, is that it has taken the thing itself, the computer, and made it the 'other world.' Technology is suggested as a 'habitat' for 'little people' who live in 'cyberspace,' another world where strange adventures can be had. What is more interesting is that the metaphors work so well, and that the tale of TRON is essentially a 'fairy tale,' literally, it is the story of Kevin O. Flynn and the "Little People" inside the computer.

As usual, our little fairy-folk are like little workers, doing their duty inside the machine, and as elves are little machinists and builders and technologists themselves, this relationship to fairy-tales gets more and more amusing as one looks into it. The Little People have their politics, and they drink the invisible nectar floating in nature, they sometimes have wars and conflicts, and in this case, the Herle-king is SARK. The MCP works magnificently as the mysterious and 'hidden' dark Lord who is incorporeal, like Pan. The Herle-king, or Herlaquen, is the Chief of all the elves, and is usually a pretty bad guy. Stringing the elves along like slaves to do bad things to mankind. In this digital fairy tale, Flynn comes along and uncovers the whole plot, and is there at the right time to help. Of course, what is even more interesting is that the Little People in TRON look up to humans like gods, while in myths, most often it is the humans who mistake the fairies for gods. This is a new spin, and when technology is taken into account, it has a whole new sense to it.

In TRON LEGACY, Flynn has been away for many years, another common tale of the man who is trapped in the land of Fey. His son comes to break him out. All of these are tales to be found in the folkore. Writers like Evans-Wentz were fascinated by fairie-lore for one of the ideas he uncovered in Buddhism was the possibility that these 'little people' or 'fairies' were parts of the subconscious, which could today be described as operating much the way the invisible scripts on computers work, or 'daemons' as they are often called. Perhaps these Little Programs and the tale of Kevin Flynn are suggesting something even deeper. Perhaps the story when taken as Little People inside the mind, rather than the computer presses another issue, that of course our brains are very much like computers (or rather...since the brain came first: the computers are very much like a brain.) Perhaps unwittingly we design and build the computers out of the depths of our unconscious, and they begin to take shape--though not as a literal brain, but 'the mind.' The mind is something not exactly quantified by science, and is thus, 'an invisible' and intangible thing, but if there were rules, if there were protocols and a mechanics to the operation of the mind, it would be like the complexity of an operating system which is not made of wires and electronic circuits but ones and zeroes... and perhaps the mind has a similar counterpart. Since we don't know, we guess, we write myths, we tell tales, and we speculate, and we speculate comparatively... so in this case, perhaps TRON is also giving us another dimension here to ponder.

TRON is truly a modern fairy tale, in the most ancient sense of fairy tales. It takes us way back, long before Grimms storybook tales, to the almost mystical and original fairy-tales. It blends technology, literally and figuratively, with fairy tale lore, while also bringing many other issues to the table. Perhaps this is why it will last many generations, perhaps longer than Star Wars and the Matrix because of its universality, because it will continue to mean something as we continue to develop our technology and our minds, and we'll keep going back and referring to TRON.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-933777950639972065.post-68881347856707034632012-03-11T12:50:00.004-07:002012-03-11T13:12:18.994-07:00Re-Rezzolutions: A Special Interview with Cindy Morgan for Yori Lives
Yori Lives proudly presents "Re-Rezzolutions" a special interview with Cindy Morgan. YORI was once a "premier designer-coordinator, recognized throughout the Complex for her exacting and uncompromising work... but now she was reduced to the status of labor automaton. She wore a workers' aspect, her circuitry muted, complete with tight helmet cap and boots." She mindlessly reads off numbers to the Guard as if hypnotized, in the book, TRON has to wake her up with energy from his hands. She and the other programs are controlled, and essentially 'misused,' she describes how this oppression is destroying the System when TRON asks her about the 'stupor' of the other programs, "Those are instructions for shutting down functions... if much more of this goes on the System is going to collapse." She explains that the MCP is not simply re-purposing the programs, it is sapping their energy, the MCP is deriving its 'power' from them literally, as well as controlling their function. The programs are shutting down more and more functions of the System, "conserving" energy for the singular governing Master Control program itself. "TRON regarded the muddled programs with pity and frustration. The USERs had been so free with their power, he remembered, their only aim was to solve problems, to achieve and create. The System had been filled with activity and accomplishments then. But the MCP wouldn't have permitted its subjects full power even if it had been able to do so and still feed itself to satiation. MCP and Sark ruled, in part, by privation, keeping their subjects weak." The stronger TRON had shared his energy with YORI to 'wake' her up, so they could go forward and fight the system. "...things are going to change. The MCP had been unwilling to divert resources for any such 'extraneous' project, and so these places retained a scant minimum of livability." The state of tyranny and oppression of the MCP has essentially led to what we might call today, "inner-city decay," and the programs, (the people) have become weakened, morose, downtrodden and dysfunctional. Both TRON and YORI clearly see that the System will fail if the oppression continues.

The Solar Sailer, docked in 'Hangar 19' is fully described in the novel, "She was an astoundingly beautiful vessel, speaking of freedom and speed even though stationary. Her forebody was shaped like an artillery shell, with an aperture for the ejection of the Transmission Beam that drove her, situated in her prow. From the waist of the forebody radiated eight sparlike masts securing the great sails that fanned out to either side like immense metallic wings. Three long, thin antennae were set around her bow aperture to maintain beam connection and emission. A single slender catwalk ran aft, the forebody's only connection to the midships. Midships was the bridge, a sort of rounded, bilevel quarterdeck. The Sailer's afterbody, a bulky, heavily shielded segment, served two functions, mounting the reception aperture through which the transmission beam entered the craft, and securing the vessel's rigging. Four long lines connected it to the deployed sails, its only connection to the rest of the ship. The Sailer suggested a dragonfly, delicate in appearance, perhaps 250 feet in length, afterbody included." YORI tells TRON, "This videogame ship--it's very fast."

The Solar Sailer is then stolen by YORI and TRON to get to the MCP. The ship's design was 'appropriated' by the MCP for use on the GRID, and though we are not told who designed it in the real world, perhaps Lora, we don't know, but as the plans were described to be shown on Dillinger's desk, perhaps yet another design stolen by Ed Dillinger. Throughout the story, the characters have to steal back what was taken and 're-purposed' by Dillinger and the MCP, and 're-purpose' it for their own goals, and throughout these 'hacks' have symbolic purposes. FLYNN complains about writing 'all those tank programs,' and has to steal a Recognizer, a vehicle from his "Space Paranoids" game. TRON is a security program who is re-purposed to be nothing but a video game player, to perhaps keep him occupied, as well as destroy resisting programs and keep them occupied while the MCP takes over. He uses his newly re-purposed skills to take down Sark and the MCP. YORI is therefore necessary to steal the ship, because after all, she designed it, or at least performed the function of designing it. I would imagine that similarly within ENCOM, Lora's job, experimenting with the digitizing laser is also not entirely her most fulfilling work, and that Dillinger and ENCOM would immediately take it from her as soon as it is perfected and sell it to the military. Perhaps she actually had more "creative" aspirations in designing the Solar Sailer, and symbolically, she's in the basement, "disintegrating things." The laser is not exactly the same laser as used at Lawrence Livermore Labs where it was filmed, but one sees the vast lab and equipment where it is housed. The Tron Laser is referred to as SHV, where as the real laser is called SHIVA. (The god of death).

She and Gibbs are not exactly 'creating' as they disintegrate organic material and 'digitize' it into a computer, though they do bring it back to reality, "turning something into nothing, and back again." The very ideas of 'creativity' are examined here, and the imagery of the laser, and the introduction of Lora wearing a helmet is foreshadowing FLYNN meeting YORI, wearing her helmet and operating a laser guided vehicle. The movement and purpose of this vehicle, taking them to 'destroy' the MCP, is symbolic of the 'use' of creation in YORI/LORA, as well as throughout the story. Characters' 'creations' are from the very beginning of the story, stolen, re-purposed, and taken back again. ("turning something into nothing, and back into something again.") Flynn, Alan and Lora team up, help eachother out, to set things straight, and stop Dillinger while Flynn, Tron and Yori team up to 'free the system' which will return it to allow the 'creators' (the User gods) to continue to 'achieve and create' and 'solve problems.' The "Macguffin" is the 'missing data' on FLYNN's game creations, but it also represents the 'achievements' of creators who in this new technological age are stolen, 're-appropriated' by greedy power-hungry corporate tyrants which utilize creations like various new popular programs and 'apps' to steal people's personal information, and control their use of the internet, which we know will have the inevitable result of stalling progress and stunt innovation and the very technological applied creativity which 'created' the computers and the internet in the first place. (As also illustrated in TRON LEGACY's CLU). Today we see the eventual result of what was then inevitable, though just as inevitable as the 'digital revolution' itself. The characters play out a narrative that illustrates a 'reality' that we all face now, while we 'navigate' in this world of ubiquitous technology and information. These same narratives take place every day, all one need do is "google the news."

DELETED SCENE

Released on the DVD of TRON is a deleted scene, "Yori's Apartment." The floor and walls and ceiling altered; lounging surfaces and reclining areas burst forth, inviting relaxation, promising comfort. The entire apartment seemed alive. How she must have to conserve her energy for even a brief period of this." In the DVD's deleted scene, he says, "Isn't this illegal?" Yori responds, "very." The idea of the MCP controlling every aspect of the lives of these beings down to how they live inside their apartments is fully illustrated in this scene, which also adds some tension to the idea that a love scene will follow. They could get caught, the world outside is oppressive and dark, these programs, these "people" are living in a world that doesn't have time for love. TRON sits and stares out at the city "He was torn between the desire to stay where he was and the knowledge that he must contact ALAN-ONE..." There are many scenes which though highly simplified are most certainly inspired by SPARTACUS. The 'slaves' are captured and forced to fight eachother for the amusement of the Romans, and the various characters hope to break free of this tyranny and perhaps take Rome, and free the slaves, but they do not succeed. What we have with TRON is a completed film, unlike a certain science fiction director out there who continually 'fixes' his movies, adding things that were never there in the first place, and hiding the things he cut out, Steven Lisberger has never messed with TRON. It still remains as it was originally. However, many fans like the peripheral details of their favorite movies, deleted scenes, original ideas never used, concepts from artwork never used, and scenes which were written and perhaps never filmed for a variety of reasons. One can look at production photos, art design concepts, read the original script to find such details, and often novelizations give away certain details as the authors of these books are given more material as the film is being made, having no idea what will be cut out or not. For TRON, we have three exterior resources to compile more peripheral information about the story, the script, the novel and production photos which show characters and possible scenes which either never made it into the final film, or perhaps filmed and either cut out before post-production or cut out for other reasons. In a series of articles I will try to examine the "Additional Material" of TRON. In Part 1, we look at the 4th Draft Script, which is available to read on the internet here. In Part 2, we will look at the novel by Brian Daley, in Part 3, we will look at all the extra peripheral details of the character Yori and Lora, and in Part 4, we will look at the combined material from alternate sources such as the DVD special features, promotional clips, and audio versions. If one looks at the differences between the first movie and TRON LEGACY, it appears very similar, and yet within the story is a different 'computer world' than the first. The idea one presumes is that in TRON LEGACY, it is a more advanced 'Grid,' with some kind of 'higher definition,' and something which resembles the first one, but is more evolved. The first was something of an idea which is a kind of 'interpretation' of a computerized 'world,' one which is supposed to be literally 'inside' the computer, and at the time was conceived from technology that existed at the time, while in a way predicting something yet to come. Perhaps in a "Tron 3" things will be even more different...

The world inside the computer of TRON LEGACY is similar, yet different, it is a world which has more 'definition' in the sense of the evolution of video game graphics, it is more detailed visually, and a little more complex. However, the 'technology' of the Grid has evolved as well. For instance, there is an added dimension of visual data interaction, the characters are using more complex in-the-Grid technology. The 'buttons' so-to-speak have evolved. The visual construction of the computer-world has caught up with our most advanced video game graphics, and has surpassed our current personal computer technology, as it was in the first film. What we see in TRON LEGACY are representations of computer technology that we don't quite have just yet, and while they look familiar in the sense of 'science fiction' futuristic movies we have seen before it, such as "Minority Report" or "Star Trek" they are actually quite a bit more advanced than such films. They are also actually a little more realistic in the sense of what is actually currently being developed and what computer engineers are trying to literally create. (They may not have any idea of how to package or sell these things yet, but they are indeed working on such things.) TRON LEGACY actually does imagine technology in much the same way as the first film in that it begins to reach outside the boundaries of our time and reality. What we see in TRON LEGACY are some concepts which, when we look back at the first movie, are somewhat baffling and impossible, or impractical, in the comprehension of the average person as well as the contemporary computer engineer. The first movie while inspiring many people, also made a lot people scoff at some of its concepts. TRON LEGACY contains some similar 'futuristic' concepts in much the same way. When we look back at the first film, we can see where certain things simply feel archaic, or dated, or completely amiss in terms of the kind of computer technology we actually did end up with in due time.

Rather than wait 25 years to make another TRON movie, we can actually try to imagine further what would be yet another new level of what TRON could be. The rate of technological advancement is increasing exponentially, and while we do not yet have touch-screen technology everywhere with holographic displays, what another TRON film should probably attempt to do is surpass LEGACY and take it to yet another level far beyond it. While most people are probably expecting another sequel to be pretty much in the same 'world,' and they will be seeing that in TRON UPRISING, perhaps we should push the imagination even further, taking a TRON 3 to yet another level in technological speculation. If TRON LEGACY was 'far out,' then TRON 3 should be even further out, and potentially so far out that it begins to move into a technological visual look that increases in complexity way beyond the 'Microsoft 2019' concept design, and way beyond something that might be imagined as " iPad 6" technology or something like that. While people are still playing with the look and feel, and the technological ideas of TRON LEGACY right now, the outfits, the level of design that is categorically "TRON LEGACY" and recognized as such, a TRON 3 should absolutely take it to a whole new level.

They may not, because often in movies and sequels, filmmakers forget, or are unconcerned with such details, or will be banking on the popularity of the designs of TRON LEGACY, and for all we know we will get a world that looks exactly the same, though if we were to follow the pattern, or the formula, we should definitely move the world of TRON to yet a more complex level, and mind blowing. But, what in the world would that really be? The complexity of such things can flutter the imagination, but would filmmakers really be that interested in taking it further? Do they have the money, the time, the technology to do it? TRON LEGACY proved that like the first TRON, the effort put into the electronic world can be costly, time-consuming, but in both cases, have an incredible result.

In 1982 computers were bulky objects, and not everyone had them, today, people have pocket sized objects like the iPad which have no buttons whatsoever. People are beginning to get used to the way in which interaction with their computers are by moving their fingers around the screen, interacting in ways that back in 1982 were totally science fiction. Dillinger's touchscreen desk computer (like a giant iPad) was imagined but it took 25 years for them to release this technology in the mass market. In TRON LEGACY, inside the Grid, the programs can manipulate multi-leveled icons, and their 'Identity Discs' produce holographic displays which at this point, the average consumer does not have. What is being currently developed is not fully imagined in the sense of 'marketing' therefore nobody knows when or just how such technology will end up in the hands of the average person. The iPad interaction would make way for more complex interactions with the screen or monitor, and beyond this are technologies which do provide the possibility for what is seen in the "Identity Disc" holographic displays, however they are bulky, and not entirely developed for such interactions.

In the original TRON, the metaphorical world of the computer suggested that some form of computerized society would develop, though it imagined it the way sci-fi usually imagines it, with exceptional exaggerations, and though we essentially did get the world of TRON, we didn't end up with wired cybersuits, and just as 'virtual reality' never really caught on, it's 2012 and nobody is logging on to the internet wearing 'VR GOGGLES,' we see that in it's visual metaphor, TRON showed us in literal ways this kind of world we'd be in, where corporate tyrants steal the intellectual property rights of their exploited employees, and where interaction and programs would be locked down, where our 'digital freedom' would be oppressed, and those who have the skilled use of the technology and understand what is happening must team up to 'free the system' and stop the digital tyrants. The idea in TRON of course was simply the idea of the 'personal computer' being in the hands of the average person, having the freedom to use it how they want to use it, and not be tied to a corporate controlled mainframe, and sign up for computer-time... Later, in TRON LEGACY, these metaphors are re-examined, and now that we have the internet, and things developed how they developed in time, the concepts are a little different. In TRON LEGACY, the programs which were supposed to free us, the stuff of the 'personal computer' are now enslaving us, "TRON" and "CLU" are villains, and ENCOM has gotten away from Flynn and those original ideas from the era of the original TRON. The corporations are 're-purposing' apps and programs, they're using your own computer, your programs, your websites, to spy on you. "Your" P.C. or in today's modern market, your iPad, is no longer your new tool of freedom, but a way for APPLE, MICROSOFT, IBM, GOOGLE, etc to keep tabs on you, to use your personal information, to restrict what you can do with your 'new tools of freedom,' and anything you do with them could make liable with some user-agreement, and they could wind up owning anything you've done with 'their' technology. TRON is no longer a security program which allows free access, he's spying on you, he's part of the control mechanism of CLU. CLU represents the 'technology that got away' from FLYNN, and this time it is much worse, CLU, like some 'evil spirit' of ENCOM is greedy for power, the original concepts of the first TRON return, and 'freedom for the User' is now more important than ever. These kinds of concepts are the contemporary metaphors for our modern world, and a third TRON film, while continuing the story of our characters should still be operating in that same kind of realm of metaphor. It shouldn't just be 'the next episode' of a soap opera, and I would assume that the producers would take all this into account, if they were truly going to proceed with another film.

A Third TRON film might actually look at the 'real world' next time around, and how it is becoming like a TRON WORLD, after all, the character Quorra at the end has made the jump from the digital world into the real world. Perhaps simultaneously, while expressions of the real world are examined as being shockingly parallel to the TRON WORLD, yet another 'GRID' is conceived, one which takes TRON to a level the audience has not yet imagined, a world in which the digital world becomes more organic--while the 'real world' becomes more digital... The science of fractal algorithms and the current study of botanical algorithms is showing us how the plant world is like a technological system, not the whole Earth mind you, not the wind and the rocks and the rain and the bugs, not the way many have described "nature" as being what they call an "ecosystem" but a completely different concept primarily concerning plants. The evolution of "ISOs" in TRON LEGACY might suggest that developing inside computers finally are some sort of mimicry of 'life' and that certain complex activities inside computers show us that what we have built with our technology unwittingly is possibly a mirror universe, entirely based on the real one we live in, and once we see technological or 'digital' versions of these things, we will begin to recognize that these things in the real world are essentially 'technology' already themselves. While humans ignorantly, like children taking apart toys and not knowing how to put them back together, tamper with genetics and genetic engineering, (which if conceived of should have been toyed with inside a computer first, and not the real world---ha ha too late now!) what we are looking at is in fact 'technology' but in a way we still do not fully understand.

Data representations and interactions which surpass TRON LEGACY would likely be swirling fractal configurations, floating before the USER projected by technology, manipulated much like Flynn when he brings up infographic-switches with his hands in the Grid, but in a more comlex fashion, the angles and geometric shapes would rise to complexity, beyond the simplicity of triangles and hexagons into massive complex multidimensional configurations currently unfamiliar to the average person. The world itself might even be a conflict of complexity vs. the old Grid of geometric 'perfection' and simple shapes. The New Complexity is seen as CHAOS by the old Grid, and perhaps the Dillingers and CLUs of this New Grid would once again attempt to control it. Ultimately, this is actually where our complex digital technology is taking us, and the question is where might TRON fit into all of this. The answer could be right in the center of it all, since it seems to be one of the only cultural metaphors operating in the realm of 'what's really around the corner' and 'how does it affect us.' A new TRON film could take a conventional approach and ignore what its origins are, and simply continue the story without taking it up another level, we could get basically TRON LEGACY 2: REVENGE OF QUORRA or something like that, or if the filmmakers are linked in with what's really going on with technology and want to take it on, TRON THE NEXT LEVEL could be constructed to blow our minds...if they choose to. TRON UPRISING will give people more of the LEGACY world as they want it, so why not take TRON 3 to another level? At the rate technology is advancing we could be there sooner than you think...
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-933777950639972065.post-1627802702400484802012-02-12T22:01:00.000-08:002012-02-13T09:31:55.002-08:00

Will be available first at Megacon.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-933777950639972065.post-90667667366779848132012-02-11T10:01:00.001-08:002012-02-11T10:57:08.922-08:00It's Campaign Season...
There are probably hundreds of 'fan campaigns' on the internet, actually, could be thousands. Fans want to express themselves, what they want from their favorite movies, television shows, etc, and what they'd like to see in 'future installments' of those things, hoping that the producers, writers, directors, and the companies which finance these projects will actually listen. Sometimes they actually work.

"Yori Lives" is one of those campaigns, and for all we know it is completely in vain--that they already actually do have plans to return Yori, or Lora to the TRON series. We have no idea, but we hope they're listening. We do know that sometimes the filmmakers do not listen, and they actually arrogantly complain and mock their own audience--their own 'customers,' their own followers, such as the case with George Lucas, who couldn't give a crap what his meal-ticket wants. In this case we're not actually asking for much, but a reasonable and obvious continuation--so long as they've decided to 'continue' that series, which they have.

We're not the only Tron Fans seeking resolutions and continuations, there are other 'campaigns' out there as well.

There are those who want "FLYNN's ARCADE" to remain open, so that those who haven't yet gotten a chance to see it can, and so that those who have can return. Why Disney would be closing this and ElecTRONica is beyond my comprehension at this point, since they have TRON UPRISING coming out, and a possible TRON 3 which everybody, and I mean everybody wants. Tron Fans want their TRON, and it would seem Disney doesn't realize the staying-power of their franchise, they don't seem to realize the enthusiasm of their own fans. Leading of course to these campaigns. Also, there is a campaign to start a "TRON CONVENTION" which I think is also a good idea, it makes sense since TRON LEGACY probably produced a few more million hard-core Tron fans which are just as intent and intense as Star Trek or Star Wars fans. We're out there, in vast numbers and growing, it makes no sense whatsoever simply from a business point of view to ignore it. They're called 'customers' and they're begging you to sell them more stuff... weird that this company which is so intent on getting even richer is ignoring yet another opportunity.

KEEP FLYNN'S ARCADE OPEN PETITION

TRON-CON PETITION

ElecTRONica Gathering

So, if you're a TRON fan, the best thing you can do is be an 'active' User, and take some time, put out some effort, and things can get done. As we now know, no such 'movie length premiere' happened in January, and I've seen some sites say that the first 10 episodes are 30 minutes in length, and others which say that these 'micro-episodes' (which is how AEON FLUX started) will be first available on the Web. At this point, as we await any actual official press statements or marketing from Disney itself, I'm not sure we can count on April being an absolute, there are so many conflicting articles on the web of TRON UPRISING, until something definitive from an official Disney site such as XD, we cannot say for sure practically anything whatsoever about what is going on with TRON UPRISING.

The "TRON OFFICIAL SITE" has absolutely no mention whatsoever of TRON UPRISING.( if you can even get it to function.) Nobody seems to have a clue what's going on the universe of TRON, and I'm not talking about "Tron 3" and the production status of TV Shows or Movies, I'm not talking about a fan-made site, I'm just talking about disseminating information about the simple products and events your company has regarding a particular brand name that happens to be pretty popular. What they've been doing (or not doing in this case) makes no $ense whatsoever. It makes you wonder.

The fans have been looking forward to something, they've been looking forward to TRON UPRISING because they said they were making it, and they put the teaser-trailer on the DVD. Nobody really has a clue as to what it is, and while everyone awaits a real sequel to TRON LEGACY, they wonder what Disney has really been up to here, why they haven't gotten it together, since it seems since that first COMIC-CON preview of TR2N and the subsequent "ENCOM" event video, and "FLYNN LIVES" campaign which had everyone's attention, the fans wonder, what happened? Were you or were you not 'rebooting' the franchise with TRON LEGACY? If you don't do 'something' soon again, you'll have to 'reboot' it all over again, because you're losing us here. In my mind the idea of 'rebooting' the series would be to bring the brand name back to the forefront, and this time keep it going if it seemed like it made money and garnered interest, well, it did, and we're still interested, and so what are you doing about it, Disney? Closing your ElecTRONica? Closing FLYNN'S ARCADE? While George Freakin Lucas is re-releasing his Star Wars crap all over again, you're closing stuff down as you are about to release a new TRON Product? Who is making the decisions up there? What is going on? This last line is for you, Disney, you invested money in rebooting the thing, it then made you money, what's the deal? Was it all for nothing or something, who could be that dense as to not see what could have been done with its success?

Well, let us hope that they've got this whole new TRON online campaign ready to roll out again, with TRON UPRISING and leading to TRON 3. Let's hope that they've been so busy diligently working on it, and that it is so clever and amazing that they've had to keep it a secret. Let's hope they're paying attention, and let's hope they're finding out from the fans themselves what they want to see, and what they really want next. The only failure in TRON so far is Disney's lack of motivation on doing anything with it again, it took them 25 years to do something with it before, maybe they really are pretty slow on this, after all TRON isn't 'Mickey Mouse,' but then if Disney is out there buying up the Muppets, Marvel Comics and everything else out there under the sun, they most certainly can't have such an isolated attitude that only 'Mickey Mouse' makes the money. We hope they're keeping it under wraps because they've got all sorts of things ready to knock our socks off like they did the last time (with Tron Legacy). Hopefully they'll read this article and get things fired up again, because it's about time they did.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-933777950639972065.post-39409330554834216772012-01-10T14:18:00.001-08:002012-01-10T14:19:48.674-08:00

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-933777950639972065.post-56062817706410447152011-12-02T08:07:00.000-08:002011-12-02T08:41:03.488-08:00Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-933777950639972065.post-84272495554793558352011-11-21T15:51:00.000-08:002011-11-21T15:52:25.994-08:00Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-933777950639972065.post-85229022270692574092011-11-21T14:32:00.000-08:002011-11-21T14:49:57.504-08:00Grid Report 11.21.11

Another week, another Grid Report with not a lot to speak of. "Shiva" which with the help of original Encom founder, Dr. Walter Gibbs, scanned and transformed an orange (citrus sinensis) into a digitalized form, and stored it on the Encom Mainframe for a few seconds, and returned it back to reality again. There went something, into 'nothing' and then back again.

This is the laser we know which was used to take Kevin Flynn to the Grid. This device in the films essentially is the tornado which takes Dorothy to the land of Oz. It is the DeLorian which takes Marty to the past...or the future. It is the looking-glass through which transports Alice to Wonderland. There is always one of these 'things' necessary to take our characters, and explain through some form of 'magic' or 'hocus pocus' or 'pseudoscience' how our characters get to where they are going. Like some magic vessel or device, it is different in each story, as each story is about something different, however, this 'magic device' also plays a part in not simply exlaining 'how' our characters get to where they are going, but offers a symbol with more meaning than one might first assume. To examine those other stories closer, you might find that the tornado, the looking-glass, the DeLorean, etc, also mean something else as well.

In our case here, our Laser was invented by a scientist in the real world called Dr.Lora Baines, in our story about Flynn, who is seeking to obtain data, evidence, on the Encom computer about the origin of his videogame programs, stolen by the evil Dillinger who essentially made it out to be that he created those games, and he gets to reap the rewards for their success. In this scenario, as the motivation for Flynn's journey, which takes an unexpected turn when the Laser brings him into the world of the Grid, Flynn is seeking justice, and just as in the real world, the Steve Jobs and Bill Gates of the world profit, and take all the credit while the Wozniaks and all the other programmers whose code has been usurped and appropriated, take the back seat, often getting nothing for their contributions. So it is that Kevin Flynn is a hero capable of fighting back, and he can do it inside the computer itself. The adventure becomes a multi-fold meaning, and adventure which takes on a variety of subtexts.

But... for all of Tron Legacy's hype about Kevin Flynn and his great

accomplishments, built on the success of the first movie, as well as Jeff Bridges himself, it could be pointed out that this movie called "TRON" has the character "Tron" in it for only a couple of minutes, and shortchanges him at that. Not only this, though the technology is being 'appropriated' by Flynn in the secrecy of his basement office, and he isn't necessarily getting rich off the thing, our movie makes no mention of one of the three main characters in the first film who built the damn thing in the first place. Perhaps Lora needs to hack into to Flynn's secret computer system to obtain the files to prove that she actually invented the SHV Laser and that Flynn has in fact in a way become like Dillinger, but only so far as we are speaking of Disney itself, or the creators of this movie, TRON LEGACY.

Eh, lots of movies end up leaving out characters in their sequels you say, what's all this nonsense about "TRON" and Yori and all that? Well, other than the fact that TRON LEGACY was actually pretty decent, I liked it a lot more than "AVATAR" though I saw neither in 3-D, the thing is, and we know how sequels sometimes go, this one really did re-energize the Tron 'franchise' in the hearts and minds of the people, the fans, etc. The thing we're doing here is saying, TRON LEGACY was great, but it was missing a few things, "TRON" for one was missing largely throughout a movie called "Tron" Legacy, and was hardly about "Tron's" legacy, but Flynn's, and we see that somebody out there was trying to involve the other beloved characters, and involve 'Alan Bradley,' Bruce Boxleitner more in these 'peripheral' supplemental videos that were made to promote the film itself, because they simply weren't in the film, either very much or at all! Alan Bradley, Roy Kleinberg, Lora Baines...Tron/Ram/Yori were simply not really much in the story... it would seem Alan and Tron were added in some last minute changes... now what we really want to see, is more of the world of the 'promotional videos' such as "Tron the Next Day" and the "Encom Event" videos, with our characters Lora Baines, Alan Bradley and Roy Kleinberg, if you're not going to give us our characters roles in the next movie, then there really isn't a "Tron" franchise here, it's a "Flynn" Franchise.

If this happens my dear Disney readers, then Tron Legacy will henceforth be referred to as "Flynn Legacy" and looked down upon as the Star Wars Prequels are today, as 'in name only' such as some fans view the last Star Trek Remake, and though all this sounds like a bunch of fanboy garbage... guess who makes your damn computers, your damn iphones, your damn cartoons, your damn television shows, your damn video games, that's right, nerds like us, who took astronauts to the moon and made it so you can download all that porn.

This may come down to an ultimatum at some point, if Yori, Ram and "Tron-as-Tron," or at the very least, Lora Baines, Roy Kleinberg and Alan Bradley DO NOT APPEAR in the next film, well I'll tell you Disney, you go ahead and spend that 200 million dollars on that thing, and hire back Hedlund and Wilde, and you see what happens to that 200 million dollars.

In the meantime, if you're paying attention to what we the fans are doing, with what spare time we do throw up something here or there on the web, you might get one or two ideas on this whole thing and where to take it, and how willing these 'Tron Fans' are to spend money on virtually anything "Tron" at all... you ignore that, and you might as well pretend you never made TRON LEGACY, and take that department in your vast corporate enterprise and set it on fire, and collect the insurance money. You'd be fools not to follow this up, even simply for the sake of $$$.

The elements and details are all there, and I don't care what some ridiculous new 24 year old director wants 'his own vision' or 'take' on TRON, that's not how you do sci-fi, sorry, look at the past, remakes seem to only work in the comic-book-superhero department, and sometimes the horror department, but the sci-fi remakes...well, they're usually horrible disasters and embarrassments. (Unless you're doing TV Shows).

So it might be that you can torture Tron with your TRON TV show and survive, it might be you completely disintegrate the TRON story with that cartoon, and you might make it work, who knows, but as far as these films go, there's a certain sense in Hollywood that if you do not pay homage, if you do not play the nostalgia card correctly, and not by cheating, your continuations of these sci-fi franchises go down in flames time after time. Look at both Planet of the Apes revivals, one was horrible and failed miserably, the other worked like a charm, and neither were because of how much money was spent on the films or the special effects. One was simply a total travesty and had virtually nothing to do with the Planet of the Apes series whatsoever, the other departed from the original plot of the series, but because it looked to that series for its main ideas, not simply the skeleton of a plot, or its imagery, but its subtext, and its intellectual foundations, and payed homage heavily to it, it worked. What I'm saying here is that Lora, Alan, Roy are deeply connected to both the original Tron's plot, but its meaning, and its subtext, you cannot surgically remove Lora from the Tron franchise and expect there not to be a reaction from fans, so why do it?

The reaction to "Tron the Next Day" and the Encom Video by fans are of great appreciation for adding back the characters which were not in the movie. Most people actually believe and assume that these characters will ALL be returning, including David Warner, as Dillinger, and his son. It just makes sense to everybody, but we sit here wondering what the hell they're going to do while we still mull over why "Tron" was given so little to do in another movie called "Tron." I've heard the answers from Liberger which sound a little forced and reaching, they know what they did, and they got by, BUT THEY WON'T BE GETTING BY THIS NEXT TIME AROUND BELIEVE ME.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-933777950639972065.post-64815112902562448182011-11-07T15:29:00.001-08:002011-11-07T16:09:50.545-08:00Grid Report 11.7.11
THE GRID REPORT 11.7.11

Here we are again, another Monday, and ...well... nothing from the officially-official corporate sponsors of "Tron" a.k.a. You see, I'm not making this shit up, at least the Canadians are still getting their Tron on. Until somebody with some financing skill, and some creativity can put together a 'Tron Convention' which is probably better sooner, rather than later, we will have the occasional 'Tron Party' or 'Tron Night' or 'Tron Rave' and while these are great costume-wearing opportunities for Tron Fans, unless you're really into techno dancing and blue drinks, there's not much for the rest of you. You can sign the Tron-Con petition if you like, to support the idea, but ultimately it isn't up to 'Disney' it's up to the right businessman or woman, you see, a 'Con' is a business, and it's ultimately a business venture, and that's why there are all kinds of groups of people out there who all they do is put on conventions. Its a pretty good deal, but in order to get started, you have to put up a pretty good sum of cash, not a fortune mind you, not the budget of Tron Legacy, but that's really what it will take. No, you might not be able to call it "Tron Con," and you might have to call it GRIDFEST or something, and you'd have to start out where you know people are going to show, like LA, Seattle or Chicago or something, but it can most certainly be done. I would suggest however until it happens, to keep talking about it on the web, like we do here, (often for no reason at all) because that's the only way it's going to happen. Investing in a 'Tron Con' is a sure thing, but I'd set up a table at COMIC CON, just to advertise it, and pass out flyers there before it happens, then you'll get your audience.

If you're into Japanese style Manga, there's a version of TRON LEGACY now available on the web. What I'm still waiting for are retro-Tron glow in the dark frisbees, because I think that would really be pretty cool, if somebody could make a few. Yes, Disney hasn't done much with their 'franchise' in awhile, and as we await Tron Uprising, with pretty much nothing to go on, and the possible news of a Tron 3, Halloween has come and Tron has infected people everywhere, still a popular costume for the festivities, and thousands of people right now are out there wearing a Tron outfit of one kind or another. The thing is, it isn't just "Tron Fandom" it is something weirder than that, it's become a 'thing,' a meme for all time, whether it is really related to the two films or not. Everything that glows is now "Tron," and the "Tron Party" or Tronification of a house, garage, bar, restaurant or club is the same as a 'Haunted House.' It has become a social theme, where young and old, Tron fans and non-Tron fans alike can participate and get crazy. It isn't so much about Sam Flynn and videogames as it is about blacklights and glow stripes, and their mood-altering effects.

I saw a page on the net this week about a school having a Tron-themed 'spirit week.' The thing is, there's so many fun things to try to mimic in Tron, it's a sure-thing, and it's something everybody is familiar with now, where as before, what would you have called it? A glow-party? A 'Rave'? People would have said that either these are bizarre things for total druggies and weirdos to do that they are to be avoided by 'normal' people at all costs. Now, it's like having a 'vampire night', or a zombie-walk, it has found it's place in Halloween, and because of its appeal, will probably survive longer than the "MASH Bash" or the Avatar bonfire.

This week Tokyoflash released its Kisai Seven Tron inspired LED watch, the latest 'Tronified' design-product to hit the Grid. That would be a crazy concert with everybody dressed in Tron Costumes, and glow-in-the-dark makeup and glowsticks. I keep telling you, a "Tron Musical" would be an interesting gig to produce, and eventually, I will turn out to be way ahead of everybody on this. Somebody will eventually do it. It has to be done with electronic music, Daft Punk would be great, but a fresh remix of the original Wendy Carlos soundtrack would best. The set pieces themselves would be amazing to behold...somebody will figure out just how to put such a show on. Back when I played the equivalent of PONG on the Odyssey, there were only a couple movies about computers, and they were about these huge monstrosities, like "Colossus" and "Novac" from a film called Gog. There was of course, HAL 9000, but these were the idea of computers as living things, as monsters. No Terminator. No Matrix. No Wargames. No Hackers. Spencer Tracy even starred in perhaps one of the first movies about computers, "Desk Set" long before the Apple IIe, or Commodore 64 was even conceived of. Computers were always big monstrosities, and only special people could run them or understand them. They were like harnessed creatures living in a dungeon, kept by their masters, in some secret castle somewhere.

IBM has developed a super-computer which they say mimics 4.5% of the human brain. They call it the BLUE GENE. They also say their SyNAPSE chip has the ability to rewire its own virtual neurosynaptic centers, allowing it to 'learn' the way humans do. They say that by 2019 it will be able to mimic the human brain by 100%. I think that we are now approaching SKYNET country... the question is what will happen in 2020...and by 2029...will we be up against an artificially intelligent super-computer?

Writers seemed to be implying that eventually, some kind of "artificial intelligence" would be born--inside a computer of course. The MCP, or "SKYNET" would eventually try to take over the world. The 'machines' would turn on us, our creation would fight against us. The inevitability of this and the irony of this has become a cliche. It still has yet to actually happen, but it is there in public consciousness.

In The Matrix, humans have to wake up out of a virtual reality in order to fight the machines. In The Terminator, the machines attempt a pre-emptive strike against humanity before they have a chance to fight against them...with a time machine. In TRON, the humans must still 'use' programs in order to fight the MCP, destroy it from the inside, and it would seem the programs become sentient as well.

Tron has a lot of ideas there in it. The MCP is kind of the same old monster, the 'Colossus' who wishes to take over. The 'Colossus' who can threaten people in the real world, and make them do things. I would imagine that this is exactly how something like this might happen, if an evil artificially intelligent computer was born.

In COLOSSUS: THE FORBIN PROJECT, this is exactly how it begins to operate, by threats, blackmail, extortion, by ordering men against eachother at first. Nobody would know that behind it all wasn't some conspiracy of Illuminati agents, but a computer...playing a kind of chess game with the human race. THE MCP in Tron was already planning to take over the Pentagon, and reach out into the world by hacking systems and controlling them, Flynn, Alan and Lora stopped it however... they would be classified today as 'cybercriminals.'

Colossus, WOPR, SKYNET, HAL 9000 and the MCP all begin as a kind of chess game, the thinking machine that sees mankind as an adversary. The computer in movies like these is a kind of ultimate evolution in computers, the 'end point,' as some would say, 'the singularity.' At some point, computers will reach that point, so long as they are being developed as they continue to be developed now. What if, however, something else happened?

Where did these ideas come from anyway about the computer becoming some sort of self-conscious intelligent entity anyways? It is implied in its original name, 'the thinking machine?' A machine that can think, like a person, which can do math for him, figure things out, perhaps even solve the world's problems for him? Today, are we even sure what it means to think anymore? Are computers doing our thinking for us? Are we becoming less and less intelligent as the computers become more and more intelligent? Or perhaps...something else is going on here, either instead of this notion, or at the very same time.

The idea of the thinking machine implies something else as well, it implies that we built, or are still trying to build a machine that can "think." In order to do that we have to know what 'thinking' is and how it works, but this isn't necessarily how computers were really born. Nobody spent time attempting to quantify the human thinking process before they decided to start building computers. The road leading to building the first computers was simple math. No math was done to explain how humans think, but what is happening, is that because of computers, people are trying to apply math to how people think, and they have suggested that our brains are like computers...

An odd thought indeed, that we envisioned a 'mechanical brain' only to eventually believe our brains are mechanical... How did this happen? How did we go from fearing these sci-fi monsters, only to suggest that we have these 'sci-fi monsters' inside our very own skulls? It would seem to me that this is what technology usually does to us humans...although not everybody sees this, usually not the people who build the technology, and that is that we build this stuff, eventually start combining our stuff into more complex stuff, and time passes, so much time that the old stuff we built our 'new stuff' out of is forgotten, and we start to wonder how the hell we got to where we are... And something unusual happens...

We have a startling revelation in the midst of this complexity, that on our course to building these things, we're re-building ourselves, we learn from the complexity of our technology that we are unconsciously remaking ourselves, and we go back and forth, taking what we know from our technology and applying it to ourselves. However, common stupidity keeps popping up, as it usually does, and instead of applying the IDEAS, we literally apply the technology. The IDEAS are then ignored, and we're stuck with wires and crap coming out of our skulls, or worse, blobs of genetically 'engineered' parts are swapped out for our original ones, and we simply become less and less human.

Taking the ideas literally is the problem, and it all happens subconsciously, as if we inherently know what we 'want' to do, but we're stuck thinking we have to make 'hardware' out of everything. Technology gets smaller, so we assume that we can then inject this crap into our veins. Ultimately what is missing from the minds of these people is that if the idea came forth from building our computers, that our brains are like computers, then the idea is that any other technology out there can reflect part of ourselves or reflect something else, and remember that these IDEAS are the mirror of physical and mechanical things. The 'thinking machine' is a 'machine that thinks' while what we have is something that inspired that thinking machine, it is the origin of it, the inspiration for it, and while we may have never intended this, there it is, and while our machines are a mimicry, we are not machines, however, the definition that comes out of this IDEA is a new one. A brain might be an 'organ made of organic tissue' the only thing truly important about it is what it does. You don't have a clue how your computer works, so how should you be expected to know how your brain works?

Again, there is a difference, how a brain or a computer works isn't as important is realizing what you can do with it. You can use your computer in a variety of ways, just as you can use your brain in a variety of ways, without knowing its components, or constitution. What people are missing here is that what people are using computers for these days, also mimics what people should be able to use their brains for, or should I say, dare I say, what people should be able to use their 'minds' for.

As of yet, nobody has seen an 'artificially intelligent' computer from one of these movies, but we do use all sorts of different kinds of computers. When nobody is using these computers, they are inanimate objects, they can be unplugged, and put on a shelf, and they are utterly useless. There is nothing in them that operates themselves. You can leave them on, download things, but once the series of commands it has been given are complete, it idles, and becomes null. A human being can have a brain, and yet have no mind at all, and there are a whole series of conditions and circumstances we know to be true in this case. However, a person with a fully functioning 'mind' can have his brain injured, altered, degraded, and he can lose his 'mind.'

As you can see, something else is going on here, beyond pure mechanics, a person is not a series of commands, he commands himself. He is a "USER." He has a will of his own, to use his brain however he sees fit. He may not know what it is made of, or how it operates on some scientific empirical level, but he somehow knows how to 'think' and how to calculate 2+2=4, and remember where his car keys are, and which orifice he is supposed to shove food into. He can think of things to build, and figure out how to build them, all with this magnificent 'tool' he was born with. The brain seems to do things, like regulate all his living biological operations, he really doesn't "think" about these background functions, they just 'run.' When people begin operating their computers, utilizing complex functions, such as build websites with flash animation, send emails, and connect to the internet, they are doing more than pressing buttons on a machine, they're doing more than writing code, and commanding their computers, they're almost not even using their computers anymore, they're in a totally different dimension, they're 'in cyberspace,' they're not even thinking about code, programming or math, and while this may seem stupid, it is no 'dumber' than not knowing where your neurons are firing, and just how those impulses are moving your hands. This is itself, 'the new idea' and that is that if you could see what you're doing on the internet everyday, and instead of explaining it with math, such as how many 'packets' or 'bits' you are sending, or how many pixels are on your screen, but see that you are 'combining' the 'senses' that your computer is capable of, and essentially doing something with a computer that goes way beyond 'mechanical.' You are operating on a whole other dimension, you are not simply pressing buttons, you're sending THOUGHTS and IDEAS to people hundreds if not thousands of miles away. They used call such a thing 'telepathy.'

The structure which we have unwittingly started to build with our technology, and not mechanically, is one which is a new dimension of IDEAS that explain to us, just what our minds, our brains, are obviously capable of. What it means is that we have to start looking at what we're doing in this 'new dimension' and imagine a few steps ahead. Where does it lead, or where can it lead? If you're sending not just simple words through 'cyberspace' but images, moving images, ideas, thoughts, sounds, etc, and just how it is you're doing this, not with the math operating in the background, but in the forefront of your mind, and if as the simple analogy is your brain is a computer, then what is the internet? What is a firewall? In other words, there are other plausible analogies.

TRON ultimately suggests quite a few of these analogies, where no other film does. It does not end with robot armies taking over the earth, nor a resistance force storming Encom. TRON takes us into the computer in a totally imaginary way in which one is removed from the dimension of 'Alan Bradley' who is hacking code, doing math, plugging or unplugging things in 'the real world.' While inside this 'computer' and once removed from the 'real world' one can look at some of these concepts which inside the computer, take on a new and different meaning.

Unlike The Matrix, where everything is an illusion, the object is to look at computers differently, and in a new way, and TRON suggests we look at computers in a new way, yet with very old values, or 'principles.' The physical dimension of plugging wires into your brain like The Matrix takes the physical side of the analogy as far as it can go, the problem is that it makes the assumption that we will never be enlightened to the fact that we might begin to operate our 'computers' before our machines plug into our brains and take advantage of our ignorance.

Cybernetics is a kind of cult of the physical, and assumes that we must utilize our brains, or our physical organs from the outside in, and not the inside out. The concept is we will use the brain from the outside, with wires, microchips and physical technology, and using it with remote controls, when our 'minds' are something that obviously come from 'within.' The opposite now, and this is a new idea, is to use the brain, with the mind, from within. Many books and films have alluded to this concept through vague and outlandish imagery, but now, today, we can begin to completely understand this process, we can illustrate and examine it, as I am doing right now in this article. It is something that may seem 'intellectual' or unimportant to the average person, as unimportant as it was to know how your MacBook works, but it is now becoming very important, because if the human race does not begin to see this, or understand this, (and we are already beginning to see why) the people who can only understand the mind or the brain with technology, we will slowly become total cyborgs over the next century, and it will be the next century, starting now, not any other time.

The cyborg is a person who has applied technology to their physical being, (imaginably it could be a machine which has applied biology to their machines as well), the person is literally becoming a machine. This is a serious mis-application of technology. People need to understand that technology should not literally be applied to themselves, but the ideas from technology should be applied. The individual must never lose their humanity, by losing their will, or their physicality, their true senses, their real feeling, otherwise, the true monstrosity will appear. The real reason for this of course, is that we must never allow ourselves to be programmed, as if we were machines, or computers, or digital 'applications.' We are not these things, we are people, and on the flipside, while we are human, and must never allow ourselves to be altered from our biologicality, we must understand that our complexified technology, i.e. computer, digital technology, the combination of all our technologies into this 'new stuff' we're playing with now is completely subconsciously mirroring what are real minds are capable of. Our 'technology' is a crude reproduction of us. The robot is a crude metal and plastic version of our bodies, cameras are eyes, microphones are ears, and the computer, a mind, and the internet...well, now I'll let your computer start figuring out what that is... that's what we are all about to understand... >the next question is also, what will we do with this once we understand?
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-933777950639972065.post-6535177060323268702011-10-24T09:43:00.000-07:002011-10-24T10:12:44.211-07:00GRID REPORT 10.24.11
GRID REPORT 10.24.11

So what happened this week in the world of TRON? It is not known whether he will be playing Tetsuo or Kaneda, and whether or not he will be wearing appliances to make himself look Japanese... Also, I wonder, if he does get the role, whether this will ever interfere with any forthcoming TRON sequels, being that for one, this AKIRA movie will probably be terrible, and for two, whether it might become any sort of scheduling conflict. Then again, these days they make movies in like 3 weeks, and most of it is CGI, probably not that big a problem.

Galaxy Nexus has the latest TRON inspired commercial, with goofy animated characters riding Light Cycles.

Graff Faucets have come up with the latest TRONified gadget, the Ametis, which seems to be a water faucet with a

joystick that glows.
